“I was booked to appear at the Apollo with him (Marvin Gaye), and it was one of the many occasions he didn’t show up.  I ended up appearing there alone which was really frightening, particularly if you know anything about the Apollo Theatre.  It was scary – they throw hard boiled eggs [if they don’t like your performance] – and the audience was waiting for Marvin.  In the end, I guess they felt sorry for me (because) I made it through that. So I reckoned I could handle any situation from then on.”
